MetaTrader basics to understand first
The MetaTrader family includes MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5), which differ in order handling, timeframes, programming language for automated strategies, and the range of markets they can support. Brokers decide which versions they license, which account types connect to each version, and what instruments appear in each platform. Because these choices vary broker by broker and can change, treat any general description of MetaTrader as a starting point, not as a statement about what VT Markets offers today.
- MT4 and MT5 are separate platforms; expert advisors written for one do not run on the other without changes.
- Available instruments, symbols and contract specifications are set by the broker, not by the platform itself.
- Desktop, web and mobile versions of MetaTrader can differ in features such as backtesting and custom indicators.
