How to Save $3,000 With A Bagged Lunch

by Tarik Pierce on October 4, 2006

The single greatest expense we encounter during the work day is lunch. It’s an expense that we both neglect and take for granted.

Work Week Lunch Expenses

Picture this:

Lunch meal at subway w/ drink - $2.99 + 1.19= $4.18 x 5 days a week = $20.92 a week in lunch expense.

And we’re only getting started. Multiply that by 4 weeks every month, and you arrive at nearly $85 a month spent on lunch. If you think that’s bad, then you haven’t seen the worst.

My colleague had the same lunch routine every day. In the morning, he would frequent AU Bon Pain and roughly spend around $3. Then for lunch, he would order a lunch platter from the same (and I mean same) Italian sub shop. I believe he truly loved chicken Parmesan. To top it all off, he ended his day with a casual Starbucks Mochafrappuccino. Come on, he had good taste for sure, but his wallet was eating more than my friend ever consumed. What do I mean by that?

Take my monthly lunch expense and factor in my colleague’s expense as well. Now, we’re looking at daily lunch costs up to $17 A DAY!!! Can you say wallet overload. To put it frank, Costco offers the same weight in food for 1/4 of the cost. If my buddy went to Costco for crouisannts, chicken parm, and a few bottled fraps, he would’ve saved $65 dollars a weeks alone. If you go further and calculate monthly and annual savings, then you’ll see what I mean.

My Weekly Lunch Expenses

In case you did, here they are:

$85 (weekly expense) - $20 (Costco expense) = $65 in savings X 48 work weeks a year = $3120 in savings!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it is possible to spend this much without thinking. When you get home on Friday evening after a long week at the J-O-B, was your daily feed AT WORK really worth $85? Probably Not.

How to Save More On Lunch

Shop at Costco or Wal-Mart and stock up on the things you enjoy eating every day. Then pack a lunch the night before and store it in the refrigerator. When you wake up in the morning, all you have to do is grab it and go. You’ll feel so great about all the money you saved, heck, maybe you’ll go out and buy a $80 meal while spending the week in Paris. I guess it all depends on us.
