I have about 5% of my retirement money in the Alpine RE Fund. I have been very happy with the fund. I have recently sold some of the fund to bring me back to 5% as this has been my best performing fund. I have the rest in index funds at Vanguard with about 40% allocated to international investments. I agree with you that there are many reasons to look for opportunities outside the US.

I’m not a tax expert, but I believe that much of that 90% payout is “return of capital” and therefore you don’t pay taxes on it even if you hold it in a regular account. Of course it lowers your cost basis, so you’ll pay more capital gains taxes when you sell.
